"Best of Newsletters" written in
my early days in Romania. Catches some amazing glimpses:
..."As I came out of the store, carrying my
loaf of bread under my arm like a football, I met a little old lady.
Seeing me, she asked rather passionately, "How much did you pay for that
bread?" I told her, "2,000 lei" ($.25 these days) "Vie!!!
(sound that means "You are kidding! I can't believe it!")
That's so much and that loaf isn't even a kilo!" Feeling more than
a bit guilty that I would so carelessly pay that much for the little
bittie thing...
